The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language is a holiday celebrated every
year in Ukraine on November 9th. According to the Orthodox calendar it is a day
of commemoration of the Rev. Nestor-Chronicler - a follower of the creators of
the Slavic script Cyril and Methodius.
The holiday was set up on November 9, 1997, when Ukrainian President Leonid
Kuchma, in support of the initiative of civic organizations and taking into
account the important role of the Ukrainian language in the consolidation of
Ukrainian society, issued Decree No. 1241/97 "On the Day of Ukrainian
Writing and Language". The decree states: "To establish in Ukraine
the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, which is celebrated annually on
November 9 on the day of commemoration of the Rev. Nestor-Chronicler".
On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Tradition:
• lay flowers to the monument to the Nestor-chronicler;
• note the best popularizers of the Ukrainian word;
• encourage publishing houses that publish literature in Ukrainian;
• The International Competition of Experts of the Ukrainian Language named
after Petro Jacyk starts - the contest was held with the support of the
Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the League of Ukrainian
patrons. The annual number of participants is more than 5 million from 20
countries of the world.
On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, on the Ukrainian radio
traditionally radio dictating of national unity is taking place. This action
has been launched since 2000. Every year, everybody can take part in the
writing of the radio dictation, and not so much to find out whether the
Ukrainian language is well known, how to demonstrate unity with all who love
and respect the Ukrainian word.
