Willow Sunday in Ukraine

Palm Sunday is the popular name of one of the major festivals of Christians. The feast is established in memory of the entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. According to the story, from this event began the suffering of Christ. This event is displayed in the Gospel of Mark, Luke, Matthew, and John.
The date of this holiday varies according to the church calendar. This celebration of the Orthodox calendar falls on the last Sunday of Lent. This holiday precedes the most important Christian holiday Easter and is celebrated exactly one week before it.
According to the Gospel, when Jesus Christ raised Lazarus from the dead, the people who witnessed it believed that he was really the Son of God. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people honored him by spreading their cloths on his path and waving palm branches.

But palm trees don’t grow in Ukraine so in the Orthodox tradition, it was replaced by a willow, a plant, which blooms in early spring and symbolizes the beginning of a new life. The willow branches symbolize Palm Sunday for the people of  Ukraine. The feast is popularly called Willow Sunday and the whole week is called the Willow Week.On this day pussy-willow branches are blessed in the church.
After Palm Sunday services, it was customary for Ukrainians to tap each other with the blessed pussy willow branches. Tapping of friends with the pussy willow branches was actually a wish for good health, wealth and happiness. The people tap one another with these branches repeating the wish: “Be as tall as the willow, as healthy as the water and as rich as the Earth. Not I am tapping, the willow is tapping. Easter is in a week!” The blessed willow branches are taken home and kept until the next Easter.

Avatar is the best film of all time for me. It is mainly a science-fiction film but it also has elements of adventure and romance. It is full of fantastic special effects. The main character Jake Sully travels to the distant and beautiful world of Pandora. He meets a woman there and falls in love with her. But greedy and cruel Colonel wants to find precious materials in Pandora and destroy this green land.

The film is super. Don’t miss it! It is worth seeing.

3.Today we are going to speak about one of the greatest English poets William Shakespeare. It is impossible to speak about the English literature without mentioning this author. He was the man who had the largest and the most comprehensive soul. People all over the world can’t help admiring his great talent.

The name of William Shakespeare is known all over the world. The last half of the 16^th and the beginning of the 17^th centuries are known as the Golden Age of English Renaissance and sometimes are called «The Age of Shakespeare». People often call Sh. «Our National Bard», «The Immortal Poet of Nature».

W. Shakespeare, the greatest and most famous English writer and playwright was born on the 23^rd of April, 1564, in a small English town Stratford-on-Avon in a family of a glove-maker.

At the age of 6 to 13 he studied at the grammar school. When the boy studied at school he had no free time. When he had a rest William liked to go to the forest and to the river Avon.

We also know that being 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, who was 9 years older that himself. His wife didn’t love theatre.They had a daughter Susanna and twins – son Hamlet and daughter Judith.

At that time actors and actresses visited Stratford-on-Avon. William liked to watch them. He was fond of their profession and he decided to become an actor. When he was 21 he went to London. There he became an actor. He began to write plays too. Shakespeare was both an actor and a playwright.

Shakespeare worked in a theatre called “Globe” and he performed many of his plays there. By 1592 he had been an important member of a well-known acting company.

We don’t know a lot of facts of Shakespeare’s life. We can only guess what kind of man he was, that’s why there are many legends about his life.

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays: 10 tragedies (such as “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “Othello” and “Macbeth”), 17 comedies (such as “As You Like It”, “Twelfth Night”, “Much Ado About Nothing”), 10 historical plays (such as “Henry 4”, “Richard 3”). He also left 7 books of poems and 154 sonnets. His plays and poems have been published in many languages. They are well known among people.

Shakespeare spent the last years of his life at Stratford, where he died on the same date as his birthday, the 23^rd of April, 1616. He was buried in the church of Stratford. A monument was erected to the memory of the great playwright in the Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.
